The motorcycle riding experience begins with an ABATE rider course:

  • Do you know how to react to special situations such as obstacles in the roadway, rain, railroad crossings, steel grate bridges, gravel roads, rain grooves, animals in the roadway, etc.?

Basic Rider Course

Have you ever wanted to learn how to ride a motorcycle? Do you already know how to ride but want to improve your skills and abilities? Do you have your motorcycle endorsement on your Indiana driver’s license? Would you like to receive a discount on your motorcycle insurance premium? Are you mentally prepared to deal with hazards while riding? Do you know how to pick the right motorcycle and riding gear to best suit your needs? Do you know how to react to special situations such as obstacles in the roadway, rain, railroad crossings, steel grate bridges, gravel roads, rain grooves, animals in the roadway, etc.?

This 18 hour course is designed for both beginning or experienced motorcycle riders who would like to learn, or improve upon the following skills:

  • BASIC SKILLS: Straight line riding, turning, shifting, and braking.
  • MENTAL SKILLS: Street riding strategies, special riding situations, proper riding attitude.
  • PHYSICAL SKILLS: Advanced turning techniques, maximum braking techniques, swerving

All for only $75 (includes $25 refundable registration fee*), $50 ABATE members (Indiana resident rates**)

Basic Rider Course requirements and other information:

  • Cost: $75 (includes $25 refundable registration fee*), $50 ABATE members (Indiana resident rates**)
  • Age: You must be 15 years or older (under 18 requires a signed parental waiver)
  • No permit or license is required to take this class.
  • Motorcycles are provided for this class.
  • Students should provide the following gear: helmet, eye protection, long sleeves, long pants, full-finger gloves, and sturdy over-the-ankle footwear.
  • Successful completion of course will waive the state skills test for licensing and may qualify you for an insurance discount.
  • Students should arrive at least 15 minutes before the class begins.
  • There are no refunds and registration is NOT transferable. Once you are confirmed, there's a $25 rescheduling fee.
  • This class is on a pass or fail basis. ABATE of Indiana assumes no responsibility for any student completion of these rider education courses. To complete the course you must attend all sessions, pass a written and riding exam.


Experienced Rider Course

Even if you’ve been riding for some time, there’s always something new to learn. The Experienced Rider Course is designed for riders to hone their skills and fine-tune the mental skills needed for survival in traffic. This course is taken on your own motorcycle* and lasts approximately 6 hours. You’ll put into practice the techniques of managing traction, stopping quickly, cornering and swerving.

The Experienced Rider Course (ERC) also helps riders obtain their motorcycle endorsement, if still riding on a permit.

Some items you will cover in this course are:

  • Risk management
  • Rider responsibility
  • Being prepared to ride
  • Mental processing
  • Traction management
  • Rider impairment

Experienced Rider Course requirements:

  • You must provide your own motorcycle*
  • Must provide following equipment: helmet, full-finger gloves, long-sleeved shirt or jacket, eye protection, over the ankle boots, long pants, rain gear
  • Must have currently valid motorcycle permit or endorsement
  • Must have street riding experience
  • Proof of Insurance

Recommended: 2 years or 5,000 miles riding experience

Cost: $50 (includes $25 refundable registration fee**), $25 for ABATE members (Indiana resident rate***)

There are no refunds and registration is NOT transferable. Once you are confirmed, there's a $25 rescheduling fee.
